How to Make Dragon's Blood POWER Oil

Dragon’s blood is a beloved incense resin and it’s use in magick has been well established. It’s deep red reminds of of the color of dried blood, and the clouds of billowing smoke when it is burned as an incense are evocative of a dragon’s breath. I don’t know of any other resin that yields as much smoke as Dragon’s Blood.

The scent of Dragon’s Blood is light and not cloying or overwhelming. It’s a soft scent, almost like baby powder, with a hint of dark resiny goodness. Dragon’s blood brings protection, peace, and power. You can use it in curse breaking, uncrossing, shielding, adding extra power to a spell, or to invoke draconic energies.

Dragon’s Blood does not have a true essential oil. If you want Dragon’s Blood as a scented oil, then you will only find artificial fragrance oils. I have used these fragrance oils and while they create a nice atmosphere, they do not carry the energetic vibration of true Dragon’s Blood. You could make up for this by putting a small chunk of Dragon’s Blood in the bottle of Dragon’s Blood Fragrance Oil.

Personally, I like my magical products to be plant based as much as possible, so I make a concentrated dragon’s blood oil. For this recipe, you will need:

  1. A heatproof surface to work on that can be easily cleaned.

  2. A ceramic oil burner. These can be purchased at the Dollar Store.

  3. Several tea light candles to warm the burner.

  4. Dragon’s Blood resin, 1 oz. You can get this in an occult store, or you can order it online. It is often sold by the ounce, but I bought a pound of this off Amazon a few years ago. Resins last a long time, so buying in bulk is a good investment .

  5. A carrier oil. I use jojoba.

  6. A stirrer for the oil. You can use a chopstick or a skewer.

  7. A spoon or teaspoon scoop for powders

  8. A dropper.

  9. A bottle to store the oil. The size depends on how much you are making.

  10. Optional Essential oils: Cinnamon, Orange, Clove, Cedar, Rose, or Patchouli

  11. Optional crystals: Red Tiger’s Eye, Black Tourmaline, Garnet, Carnelian

Place a tealight on top of a raised surface inside your oil burner. You can use a jar lid, or the tin of a tealight turned upside down. Light the candle. As you will see, this raises the candle flame up closer to the bowl of the burner, which will cause it to get hotter. Please be careful and do not tip this over. Watch your fingers.

Grind up your Dragon’s Blood. If you don’t have a mortar and pestle, you can take a smooth rock and a wooden or heavy ceramic bowl and crush the resin into powder.

Now take a spoon… I like to have a silver spoon set aside for mixing potions like this. I’m taking this spoon and eyeballing about ¼ a teaspoon, I’m going to add this to the oil burner.

Now you’ll begin to see it melt. This is what you want to happen. You don’t want it to burn, but if there’s a little bit of bubble, or a little bit of smoke or dragon’s blood vapor coming up, that’s okay. What you want is for the resin to melt. When you see it melt, stir it gently. Now you’ll notices little hairs start to form as it cools immediately… it’s not warm enough yet. Although these little dragon’s blood “hairs” are pretty fun, they don’t last very long. They break pretty easily.

Now once this resin is nice and liquidy, start adding oil a little at a time as well. Stir the oil into the liquid resin and just keep stirring. The dragon’s blood and oil are well heated and you’re going to want to add as little oil as possible but you also want all of the resin to be completely dissolved in the oil.

If your resin doesn’t dissolve, you haven’t heated it long enough or you haven’t added enough oil.

Once the resin and dragon’s blood are combined well, you can use the dropper to transfer the oil from the burner into the bottle. Do not try to pour the oil. You’ll make a mess and you’ll waste your oil, possibly burn yourself, or ruin your furniture. Take your time and siphon it out a little at a time in the bottle.

Now you can repeat the process. Melt some more dragon’s blood and add the oil and keep doing this until your bottle is full. This is a long process but so worth it.

I’d like to share some of my personal beliefs about Dragons. To me, dragon’s are NOT Pokémon characters that you befriend and then send to do your bidding. Dragons are symbols for something bigger and greater. using one of the essential oils listed, as these will enhance the energy of the oil without changing or diluting the power of the dragon’s blood.

Some Info about Dragon’s Blood:

Dragon’s blood resin is actually harvested from a couple of different plants. The most common is Daemonorops Draco, which is a spiny palm shrub. When you buy dragon’s blood, always buy it in chunks. If you buy it “already ground” then you can’t be sure that what you are getting is really dragon’s blood. You can buy dragon’s blood in a giant chunk with a gold seal on it, and this is known as “Gold Seal” dragon’s blood. Often when you buy chunks you’ll find pieces with a gold seal on it. Also, if you get some tongs and burn a bit of dragon’s blood and smell it’s smoke, you can tell it’s real. If it’s in powder, you can’t know that it is actually dragon’s blood because you can’t see the texture. Sometimes it’s just scented and dyed wood powder.

If you’ve ever looked into fractals, sacred geometry, the fibonacci sequence, you’ve perhaps seen a Mandelbrot set. Using the Mandelbrot set as a model, you can imagine the geometry of the universe unfolding in patterns in nature through the expressions of the golden ratio and Fibonacci sequence. The Universe is a conscious fractal, and every iteration of nature is an expression of that fractal consciousness.

To me, a great Universal Dragon is the perfect symbol to represent this fractal consciousness and dragons are the perfect symbol to represent the individual iterations of consciousness unfolding through sacred geometry of the Universe.

So when I watch a morning glory climb, that is draconic. When I watch the swirls of almond milk in my coffee move in spirals and eddies, that is draconic. When I look up at the stars, all careening through the galaxy going thousands of miles an hour as their planets dance in circles around them, that is draconic.

It is the physical unfolding of energy and matter, yet it is non-physical consciousness, greater than any of us. It is instinctual and unconscious, yet can be influenced by conscious direction if you apply consciousness in just the right subtle ways. This is what magick allows you to do.
